Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Skeletal Metastasis Research

Background:

  • Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor arising from cartilage cells.
  • Metastasis typically involves the lungs, progressing to other organs.
  • Skeletal metastases from chondrosarcoma are uncommon, with subungual involvement being exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A patient previously treated for foot chondrosarcoma presented with soft tissue metastases in digits.
  • Multiple metastases were noted in the fingers and toes.
  • A specific lesion was located beneath the fingernail (subungual).

Findings:

  • Subungual chondrosarcoma metastases represent an unusual clinical presentation.
  • No established evidence-based treatment guidelines exist for this specific condition.

  • The affected finger lesion was treated with complete nail resection (RO).
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for chondrosarcoma to metastasize to unusual sites like the nail bed.
    • Surgical intervention, such as resection, may be a viable treatment option for localized subungual metastases.
    • Further research is needed to establish optimal treatment protocols for rare metastatic presentations of chondrosarcoma.
