Background:

  • Propofol and succinylcholine are commonly used anesthetic agents in ECT.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of propofol and succinylcholine in achieving optimal convulsions during ECT.
  • To assess the safety profile of propofol and succinylcholine in ECT patients.
  • To determine the influence of these agents on seizure duration and patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study of 108 patients undergoing ECT.
  • Recorded patient demographics, anesthetic doses (propofol, succinylcholine), and electroencephalogram (EEG)-measured seizure duration.
  • Statistical analyses included correlations, t-tests, Mann-Whitney U test, and ANOVA.

Main Results:

  • Mean propofol and succinylcholine doses were 1.34 and 1.35 mg/kg, respectively.
  • Seizure duration averaged 29.87 seconds, negatively correlated with age, and unaffected by propofol dose or weight.
  • Longer seizures observed in male and schizophrenic patients; low complication rates (2.4% cardiovascular, 1.4% agitation).

Conclusions:

  • ECT is safely administered in a controlled setting with general anesthesia and neuromuscular blockade.
  • Propofol, at the doses used, did not alter seizure duration in ECT.
  • This anesthetic combination effectively prevents psychological and musculoskeletal trauma during ECT.
