Summary

Trans-electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may improve somatic tinnitus. This study found TENS reduced or eliminated tinnitus in 46% of patients, particularly those with intermittent "typewriter" tinnitus.

Main Results:

  • TENS improved tinnitus in 46% of participants (23% reported elimination, 23% reported reduced intensity).
  • Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores improved significantly from 6.5 to 6.0 (p<0.01).
  • Intermittent "typewriter" tinnitus showed the best response; somatic tinnitus without otologic disease responded better than cases with otologic involvement (p=0.047).

Conclusions:

  • TENS is a potential therapeutic option for managing somatic tinnitus.
  • The treatment appears particularly effective for specific tinnitus types and in patients without underlying otologic conditions.
  • Further research into TENS mechanisms and patient selection is warranted.
