Summary

Women with Turner syndrome (TS) can develop a mature uterus, even with delayed hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Adequate treatment duration and type, particularly estradiol, are key factors for uterine development in TS.

Background:

  • Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic condition affecting females, often associated with underdeveloped reproductive organs.
  • Uterine development in women with TS is a critical factor for potential fertility and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate uterine development in women with Turner syndrome (TS) undergoing conventional medical care.
  • To identify factors influencing uterine maturation in women with TS.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional ultrasonography study of 86 women (18-45 years) with TS and abnormal karyotypes.
  • Assessment of uterine dimensions and shape.
  • Information on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) gathered via personal interview.

Main Results:

  • 25% of women with TS had a mature uterus; 31% had an immature uterus.
  • Uterine maturity was associated with spontaneous puberty and the duration/type of HRT.
  • Estradiol-based HRT was most effective; age at HRT initiation was not critical.

Conclusions:

  • Women with TS can achieve normal uterine development, irrespective of karyotype.
  • Adequate duration and type of hormone replacement therapy are crucial for uterine maturation in TS, even with late initiation.
