Background:

  • Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy demands advanced skills for tumor removal and renal reconstruction, especially for complex renal tumors.
  • Minimally invasive nephron-sparing surgery for complex renal tumors presents significant challenges.

Observation:

  • A robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy technique was employed for 14 complex renal tumors in eight patients.
  • Patient cases included hilar, endophytic, and multiple tumors, with some having hereditary kidney cancer.

Findings:

  • All robotic partial nephrectomy procedures were successful without complications, achieving negative surgical margins.
  • Mean warm ischemia time was 31 minutes, with a mean blood loss of 230 ml.
  • Histopathology revealed various renal cell carcinoma subtypes and oncocytomas; patients maintained stable renal function post-surgery with no recurrence at 3 months.

Implications:

  • Robotic partial nephrectomy is a safe and viable option for select patients with complex renal tumors.
  • This technique facilitates minimally invasive, nephron-sparing surgery, potentially avoiding open procedures or radical nephrectomy.
