Idiopathic pulmonary artery aneurysm is rare. This case report details a successful surgical repair in a young man using aneurysmectomy and a synthetic graft, with excellent short-term outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Pulmonary artery aneurysms (PAAs) are uncommon thoracic vascular lesions.
  • Idiopathic PAAs without other symptoms are rarely documented.
  • Optimal management strategies and long-term outcomes for PAAs remain unclear.

Observation:

  • A 24-year-old male presented with a main pulmonary artery aneurysm.
  • The patient had an idiopathic lesion without additional symptoms.
  • Surgical intervention was deemed necessary.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent successful aneurysmectomy and reconstruction with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) vascular graft.
  • The postoperative recovery was uneventful.
  • Postoperative imaging confirmed normal dimensions of the great vessels.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the feasibility and potential success of surgical repair for idiopathic main pulmonary artery aneurysms.
  • Aneurysmectomy with PTFE graft replacement offers a viable treatment option.
  • Further studies are needed to establish long-term outcomes for this surgical approach.
