Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation01:20

Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation

Cell separation was first achieved in 1964 by S. H. Seal, who separated large tumor cells from the smaller blood cells using filtration. Two years later, Pohl and Hawk performed experiments on how cells respond differently to a nonuniform electric field based on the cell type. Such observations were the inception of cell separation methods, which allow isolating a single cell type from a heterogeneous sample.
Tissue Homogenization and Cell Lysis01:32

Tissue Homogenization and Cell Lysis

Tissue homogenization involves disintegrating tissue architecture and lysing cells, and is an early step in isolating and analyzing cellular components. The method used for homogenization depends on the sample type, the amount of sample available, the analyte to be obtained, and the sensitivity of the method. These methods are broadly classified as mechanical and non-mechanical methods.

Summary

Blood banking efficiency improves with lower discard rates of red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets (PLTs). Data envelopment analysis (DEA) highlights that accounting for discarded components is crucial for accurate efficiency assessments.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Operations Research
  • Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine

Background:

  • Increasing cost pressures necessitate improvements in blood banking production efficiency.
  • Technical efficiency in blood collection and processing is vital for resource optimization.
  • Discard rates of blood components impact overall operational effectiveness and cost.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between discard rates and technical efficiency in blood banking.
  • To assess the impact of discarded blood components on efficiency metrics.
  • To inform strategies for enhancing the production chain of collected blood.

Main Methods:

  • Data envelopment analysis (DEA) was employed to model technical efficiency.
  • Included whole-blood (WB) collections, aphaeresis-platelets, and discarded red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets (PLTs).
  • Analyzed the correlation between discard proportions and efficiency scores.

Main Results:

  • Technical efficiency tended to be higher when the proportion of RBC and PLT discards from WB collections was lower.
  • DEA models demonstrated that including discarded components significantly affects efficiency outcomes.
  • Lost production output from discards represents a quantifiable monetary value.

Conclusions:

  • Minimizing discard rates is essential for improving technical efficiency in blood banking.
  • Discarded blood components must be incorporated into efficiency analyses for accurate evaluation.
  • Optimizing the blood collection and processing chain can mitigate costs and enhance resource utilization.
