Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Dental Diagnostics
  • Endodontics

Background:

  • Accurate pulp vitality testing is crucial for diagnosing dental pain and planning treatment.
  • Variability in pulp response based on tooth surface location can affect diagnostic accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the optimal site on first molars for reliable electric pulp testing (EPT).
  • To compare EPT responses across different anatomical sites on maxillary and mandibular first molars.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty volunteers underwent EPT on seven sites of their first molars.
  • An Elements Diagnostic Unit was used, with lowest threshold responses recorded.
  • Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test.

Main Results:

  • The mesiobuccal cusp tip yielded the lowest (most sensitive) EPT threshold for both maxillary and mandibular molars.
  • EPT thresholds increased at other sites, including the cuspal surface and gingival areas.
  • While males generally responded at higher thresholds, no significant gender difference was found at the mesiobuccal cusp tip.

Conclusions:

  • The mesiobuccal cusp tip is the most effective site for EPT of first molars.
  • This finding aids clinicians in achieving more consistent and accurate pulp vitality assessments.
  • Optimizing EPT site selection can improve diagnostic outcomes in endodontic evaluations.
