Summary

The amplitude-logVA regression method more accurately estimates sweep pattern visual evoked potential (SPVEP) acuity compared to the amplitude-spatial frequency method. This finding is significant for assessing visual acuity in individuals with normal vision.

  • Estimating visual acuity from VEPs requires robust extrapolation methods.
  • Comparing different regression models is essential for refining VEP analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the accuracy of amplitude-spatial frequency (A-SP) and amplitude-log visual-angle (A-logVA) regression methods.
  • To evaluate their effectiveness in extrapolating sweep pattern visual evoked potential (SPVEP) acuity.

Main Methods:

  • SPVEPs were recorded in 21 children and 3 adults using sinusoidal gratings.
  • SPVEP acuity was estimated using A-SP and A-logVA regression methods.
  • Visual acuity was also measured using the Bailey Lovie logMAR chart for comparison.

Main Results:

  • The A-logVA method showed a higher correlation index (0.95) than the A-SP method (0.92).
  • SPVEP acuity derived from A-logVA was not significantly different from logMAR acuity (P=0.09).
  • SPVEP acuity derived from A-SP significantly differed from logMAR acuity (P<0.01).

Conclusions:

  • The amplitude-logVA regression method is more accurate for estimating SPVEP acuity.
  • This method is particularly effective in normal subjects with good visual acuity.
  • A-logVA provides a more reliable extrapolation of SPVEP acuity compared to A-SP.
