Summary

One-appointment endodontic therapy for asymptomatic teeth with apical periodontitis is feasible in select cases, supported by current biological evidence. Further randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and outcomes.

Teeth

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...

Main Results:

  • Enlarging the apical canal preparation enhances bacterial eradication.
  • Adequate apical enlargement improves antimicrobial irrigant delivery.
  • The correlation between preobturation cultures and treatment outcomes remains unclear.

Conclusions:

  • One-appointment endodontic therapy is potentially feasible for selected asymptomatic teeth with apical periodontitis.
  • More randomized controlled clinical trials are necessary to validate these findings.
