Summary

Error-correction procedures in behavioral acquisition were studied. Some developmentally delayed subjects improved more with specific error-correction methods, suggesting these procedures can have multiple functions.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Learning Sciences

Background:

  • Understanding error-correction mechanisms is crucial for effective behavioral acquisition strategies.
  • Previous research has not fully delineated the specific functions of different error-correction procedures.
  • Developmentally delayed individuals may benefit from tailored error-correction techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the mechanisms underlying error-correction procedures during behavioral acquisition.
  • To compare the efficacy of different error-correction conditions in match-to-sample discrimination training.
  • To identify the functional components of error-correction procedures.

Main Methods:

  • A multielement design was used with seven developmentally delayed subjects.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Three conditions were implemented: baseline (differential reinforcement), practice (error repetition), and avoidance (irrelevant stimuli after error).
  • Correct responses were reinforced with praise and edibles/tokens.
  • Main Results:

    • All subjects showed progress in the baseline condition.
    • Five out of seven subjects performed better under one of the error-correction conditions.
    • Two subjects improved more in the practice condition, while three improved more in the avoidance condition.

    Conclusions:

    • Error-correction procedures can serve multiple functions in behavioral acquisition.
    • The practice condition likely involved both avoidance and stimulus control.
    • Future acquisition studies should incorporate control procedures to identify specific behavioral mechanisms.
