Abstract:
Short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) consist of responses recorded at multiple locations along the peripheral and central sensory pathway following stimulation of a nerve. Median nerve (MN) and posterior tibial nerve (PTN) stimulation are commonly used for both clinical and intraoperative SSEPs. In order to obtain interpretable SSEP recordings, the technologist should have a basic understanding of the nerve pathway being evaluated, recording parameters and techniques, as well as the recommended minimal requirements for recording and interpretation. This article reviews these topics and includes information regarding electrode placement and alternate stimulation sites.
