Summary

Serum prolactin levels in depressed patients correlate with dissociative symptoms, suggesting a link to passive coping mechanisms. Traumatic stress symptoms did not show a significant relationship with prolactin levels.

  • The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is typically dysregulated in response to traumatic stress and dissociation.
  • Understanding neuroendocrine markers associated with these conditions is crucial for effective treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between basal serum prolactin levels and dissociative symptoms.
  • To examine the association between basal serum prolactin levels and symptoms of traumatic stress in patients with unipolar depression.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed 25 inpatients diagnosed with unipolar depression using dissociation (DES) and traumatic symptom (TSC-40) scales.
  • Measured basal serum prolactin levels using standard biochemical analytical methods.

Main Results:

  • A significant positive correlation was observed between serum prolactin levels and dissociative symptoms (r=0.52, p=0.004).
  • No significant correlation was found between serum prolactin levels and traumatic symptoms as measured by the TSC-40 (r=0.31, p=0.07).

Conclusions:

  • Serum prolactin levels in patients with unipolar depression are associated with dissociative symptoms.
  • This association may be attributed to passive coping mechanisms contributing to dissociation.
