Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of CAPD as a renal replacement therapy in Saudi patients.
  • To identify challenges and common complications associated with CAPD in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study included 91 patients (50 male, 41 female) managed with CAPD between May 1993 and September 2002.
  • Tenckhoff catheters were surgically implanted, and dialysis typically involved 2-L exchanges four times daily.
  • Patient demographics, dialysis management, infection rates, and treatment outcomes were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Peritonitis occurred at a rate of 1 episode per 21 patient-months, and exit-site infections at 1 episode per 24 patient-months.
  • Common causative organisms for peritonitis included Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus species.
  • Catheter removal was necessary for 32 patients, primarily due to infection (20 cases) or mechanical issues (12 cases).
  • Twenty patients died, with peritonitis and sepsis being the leading cause.

Conclusions:

  • Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is a feasible renal replacement therapy option in Saudi Arabia.
  • Peritonitis represents the primary complication and challenge in managing CAPD patients in this region.
  • Further strategies to mitigate infection risks are crucial for successful CAPD implementation.
