Summary

This study analyzed percutaneous biliary drainage in 600 obstructive jaundice patients over 10 years. Externo-internal drainage is recommended initially, followed by internal drainage or stents for effective treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Interventional Radiology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hepatology

Context:

  • Obstructive jaundice presents a significant clinical challenge.
  • Percutaneous biliary drainage (PBD) is a key intervention for managing biliary obstruction.
  • Evaluating long-term outcomes and procedural nuances of PBD is crucial.

Purpose:

  • To retrospectively analyze the types and techniques of PBD used in obstructive jaundice.
  • To assess the therapeutic efficacy and complication rates of different PBD methods.
  • To propose an optimized algorithm for PBD selection and management.

Summary:

  • A 10-year retrospective analysis of PBD in 600 obstructive jaundice patients.
  • Positive therapeutic outcomes were observed in approximately 75% of cases.

  • Common complications were identified, and an algorithm for percutaneous derivation was discussed, favoring initial externo-internal drainage.
  • Impact:

    • Provides evidence-based recommendations for PBD technique selection.
    • Highlights the importance of initial externo-internal drainage followed by internal drainage or stenting.
    • Suggests covered metallic stents as a preferred option for endoprosthesis placement.
