Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Spinal Fusion Techniques

Background:

  • Posterior cervical spine surgery presents challenges in achieving stable fixation.
  • The cervical lateral mass plate technique is an alternative fixation method.

Observation:

  • Eight patients underwent posterior cervical approach operations using lateral mass plates.
  • Patient diagnoses included cervical vertebral fracture-dislocation, spinal cord injury, and spinal stenosis.
  • Screws were placed from C2 to T1, with a total of 40 screws positioned.

Findings:

  • No screw malposition was observed in any patient.
  • One patient experienced transient spinal instability, successfully managed with a brace and achieving fusion.
  • All other patients achieved spinal stability and fusion, with neurological function recovery noted.

Implications:

  • Cervical lateral mass plate fixation provides robust segmental immobilization.
  • This technique is effective for achieving cervical spine stability and promoting fusion.
  • The posterior approach with lateral mass plating is a viable option for complex cervical pathologies.
