  • Expanding treatment options and integration of molecular factors into clinical algorithms.
  • Increased interest in percutaneous renal mass biopsy (pRMb) for SRMs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review indications, techniques, complications, and efficacy of pRMb.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and safety of pRMb for SRMs.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive literature review of MEDLINE/PubMed.
  • Evaluation of studies on pRMb techniques, including radiographic guidance, needle size, and pathological analysis.
  • Analysis of complication rates, technical failure, and diagnostic accuracy over time.

Main Results:

  • pRMb with 2-3 cores using 18-gauge needles improves diagnostic accuracy with low morbidity (<5% minor complications).
  • Technical failure rates decreased from 9% (pre-2001) to 5% (post-2001).
  • Diagnostic accuracy improved, with indeterminate/inaccurate findings decreasing from 10% to 4%; overall success rate >90%.
  • Immunohistochemical and molecular analyses further enhance pRMb accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • Enhanced pRMb may aid decision-making in complex SRM cases.
  • Standard treatment for most SRMs remains surgical excision, irrespective of biopsy findings.
