Background:

A plasmid deletion mutant of Chlamydia trachomatis emerged in Sweden in 2006.
This variant evades detection by commercial diagnostic tests targeting the deleted plasmid region.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the prevalence and spread of the Chlamydia trachomatis plasmid deletion mutant in France.
To establish a surveillance system for this specific strain.

Main Methods:

A laboratory-based surveillance system was implemented.
1,141 Chlamydia trachomatis-positive specimens from across France were tested.
Samples were analyzed to identify the presence of the plasmid deletion mutant.

Main Results:

The Chlamydia trachomatis variant was detected in only one specimen.
The single case identified was a non-French resident attending a sexually transmitted infections clinic.
The variant does not appear to be widely established in France at this time.

Conclusions:

The Chlamydia trachomatis plasmid deletion mutant is currently rare in France.
Continued surveillance is necessary to monitor potential establishment and spread.
Public health strategies may need adaptation for novel Chlamydia trachomatis strains.
