Background:

Health statistics are crucial for public health decision-making in Thailand.
The efficiency and utility of current health reporting forms are not well-established.
Peripheral health workers' perspectives on reporting tools are valuable but often overlooked.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate health worker opinions on the utility and cost-effectiveness of health statistics report forms.
To assess the time burden associated with health information compilation.
To identify areas for improving the efficiency of health reporting systems.

Main Methods:

A consortium of health workers designed and tested questionnaires.
Surveys were distributed to 787 randomly selected health centers and rural hospitals in Thailand.
Utility scores and time spent on 37 different report forms were analyzed.

Main Results:

Utility scores correlated positively with time spent on reporting (Rp = 0.058, P = 0.002).
However, the utility/time ratio showed a significant negative correlation with time spent (Rp = -0.63, P < 0.0001).
Reports requested occasionally by administrators had the lowest utility/time ratio, indicating poor cost-effectiveness.

Conclusions:

Peripheral health workers are capable of contributing to the design and execution of health information research.
High time investment in health information reporting does not necessarily translate to increased cost-effectiveness.
Optimizing reporting processes is essential to improve the efficiency of health statistics systems.
