Summary

Thorough polishing after interproximal enamel reduction is crucial for achieving smooth tooth surfaces. Oscillating systems, like the Profin system and Ortho-Strips, demonstrated superior smoothness in this study.

Area of Science:

  • Dental materials science
  • Biomaterials engineering
  • Oral health research

Background:

  • Interproximal enamel reduction is a common dental procedure.
  • Surface roughness after reduction can impact oral health.
  • Evaluating current polishing techniques is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the surface roughness of enamel after using different interproximal polishing systems.
  • To assess the effectiveness of various enamel reduction and polishing methods.

Main Methods:

  • Digital subtraction radiography, profilometry, and scanning electron microscopy were used.
  • Five interproximal enamel reduction methods were tested: Profin, New Metal Strips, O-Drive D30, Air Rotor, and Ortho-Strips.
  • Enamel surfaces were either ground only or ground and polished.

Main Results:

  • Ortho-Strips showed significantly less tooth substance loss.
  • Grinding alone resulted in rough surfaces, with Air Rotor and Profin being the roughest.
  • All polishing methods reduced roughness, but Profin and Ortho-Strips achieved the smoothest surfaces.

Conclusions:

  • Interproximal enamel reduction necessitates thorough polishing.
  • Oscillating systems (Profin, Ortho-Strips) appear advantageous for achieving smoother enamel surfaces.
