Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychopathology

Background:

  • Psychopathological concepts like 'pensée opératoire' and alexithymia are explored.
  • Recent cognitive science trends highlight dual brain hemisphere skills.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and validate a novel test assessing parallel visual information processing.
  • To investigate the relationship between logical task performance, visual attention, and alexithymia.

Main Methods:

  • Development and validation of the Parallel Visual Information Processing Test.
  • Testing over 100 subjects to assess cognitive performance and attentional abilities.

Main Results:

  • The test demonstrated reduced holistic visual attention during logical task performance.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This impairment was characteristic of individuals with poor fantasizing ability and operative behavior.
  • Conclusions:

    • Findings suggest a link between reduced holistic attention, operative thinking, and alexithymia.
    • Results align with theories proposing a functional commissurotomy in alexithymic and psychosomatic patients.
