Summary

This review of temporomandibular joint total replacement systems found encouraging outcomes. Further multicenter trials are needed to standardize patient selection and indications for these prostheses.

Background:

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is crucial for mastication and speech.
TMJ disorders can significantly impact quality of life.
Total joint replacement is a treatment option for severe TMJ dysfunction.

Purpose of the Study:

To review current knowledge on temporomandibular joint total replacement systems.
To evaluate therapeutic outcomes and identify limitations in existing research.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive Medline search identified English-language, peer-reviewed articles from 1990-2006.
Twenty-eight references were analyzed, including reviews, clinical trials, case series, and case reports.
