Background:

Rising demand for gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy necessitates strategies to improve appropriateness.
Physician education is a key approach to mitigate inappropriate procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of an educational program on reducing inappropriate colonoscopies within an open-access endoscopy system.

Main Methods:

Prospective study conducted in a single endoscopy unit in Italy.
Involved 1017 outpatients undergoing diagnostic colonoscopy before and after an educational course.
Assessed rates of inappropriate colonoscopies, cost savings, and waiting list duration.

Main Results:

A significant reduction in the rate of inappropriate colonoscopies was observed post-education (P < or = .001).
Estimated annual economic savings of €19,000 were achieved.
Waiting list times decreased by approximately 15%.

Conclusions:

Educational interventions are highly effective in decreasing inappropriate colonoscopies in open-access settings.
Implementing such programs leads to reduced healthcare costs and improved patient access through shorter waiting lists.
