Dacron swabs are more effective than cervical brushes for collecting anal samples to detect human papillomavirus (HPV)-DNA. This method improves the identification of HPV-associated diseases during anal screening.

Main Results:

  • High-risk HPV-DNA detected in 51.4% and low-risk HPV-DNA in 58.6% of patients.
  • Dacron swab sampling showed significantly higher positive results for both low-risk (4.3% vs 2.3%) and high-risk (4.9% vs 3.1%) HPV compared to cervical brush (P < 0.0001).
  • Dacron swabs yielded higher relative light unit values, indicating greater viral load, for both HPV types.

Conclusions:

  • Anal HPV-DNA testing using Hybrid Capture 2 is a valuable tool for detecting HPV-associated anal disease.
  • Dacron swab collection is superior to cervical brush for identifying HPV-positive patients and yields higher signal values.
  • Further research is necessary to establish the precise role of Hybrid Capture 2 in screening for anal precancerous lesions.
