Decreased Body Temperature01:29

Decreased Body Temperature

A decreased body temperature can occur in patients with hypothermia and frostbite. Heat loss with extended cold exposure overpowers the body's ability to create heat, resulting in hypothermia. Core temperature readings help classify hypothermia. Mild hypothermia is temperatures between 32 °C (89.6 °F) and 35°C (95 °F) and is caused by impaired thermoregulation. Moderate hypothermia is temperatures between 28 C (82.4 °F) and 32 °C (89.6 °F) caused by sustained extreme cold exposure, and severe...

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation II: ACLS Airway Management

Airway management is a key skill in emergency and critical care settings, as maintaining a clear airway is essential for adequate oxygenation and ventilation.Head Tilt-Chin Lift TechniqueThe head tilt-chin lift maneuver is an essential technique primarily used in patients without suspected cervical spine injuries. To perform this maneuver, one hand is placed on the patient’s forehead, and gentle pressure is applied backward to tilt the head. The fingertips of the other hand are positioned under...

Administering Oxygen by Mask

Administering Oxygen by Mask
Administering oxygen by mask is a common nursing intervention that provides supplemental oxygen to patients with respiratory distress or chronic lung conditions. This procedure involves delivering oxygen at a specified rate through a face mask connected to an oxygen source.

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings II: Doffing

The sequence of removing or doffing PPE starts with the gloves, as they are the most contaminated. Next is removal of the face shield or goggles, as they would interfere with removing other PPE. Then remove the gown, followed by the mask or respirator. Perform hand hygiene between steps if hands become contaminated and immediately after removing all PPE. Generally, the outside front and sleeves of the isolation gown, the goggles or the mask, the respirator, and the face shield are contaminated.

Design Example: Flow Through a Fire Extinguisher

A fire extinguisher that uses pressurized water relies on fluid dynamics principles to generate a high-velocity stream capable of suppressing flames. The water is stored at a much higher pressure inside the extinguisher than the surrounding atmosphere. This pressure difference forces the water to flow rapidly when the extinguisher is activated, and the behavior of the water as it exits the nozzle can be understood using fundamental equations of fluid dynamics.
The key to understanding how the...

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Summary

For facial cosmetic surgery patients under sedation, a nasal cannula delivers higher oxygen concentrations near the face than a nasopharyngeal tube. The nasopharyngeal tube system significantly reduces oxygen levels, approaching ambient air concentrations.

Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Respiratory Therapy

Background:

  • Investigating safe supplemental oxygen delivery for patients undergoing facial cosmetic surgery under conscious sedation.
  • Comparing nasal cannula versus nasopharyngeal tube oxygen delivery methods in 20 patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the safest and most effective method of supplemental oxygen delivery during facial cosmetic surgery.
  • To compare oxygen concentration levels achieved by nasal cannula and nasopharyngeal tube.

Main Methods:

  • Oxygenation was administered at 3 liters/minute via nasal cannula or nasopharyngeal tube in 20 patients.
  • Oxygen concentrations were measured at 24 facial locations using a mass spectrometer.
  • Measurements were taken at various intervals around the nasal and perioral areas.

Main Results:

  • Higher oxygen concentrations were consistently observed with the nasal cannula compared to the nasopharyngeal tube at all measured sites above the nasal area (p = 0.004).
  • The nasopharyngeal tube system resulted in significantly lower oxygen concentrations.

Conclusions:

  • The nasopharyngeal tube system effectively reduces oxygen concentration, approaching ambient air levels, even close to the source.
  • This suggests potential safety benefits in minimizing oxygen exposure during procedures like facial cosmetic surgery.
