    Summary

A new hybrid fiber taper coupler improves microsphere laser performance. This novel coupler efficiently couples pump and laser light, enabling a 112 microwatt single-frequency output from an erbium-ytterbium doped phosphate microsphere laser.

    Area of Science:

    • Photonics and Laser Technology
    • Materials Science

    Background:

    • Microsphere lasers offer high-quality optical resonance.
    • Efficient coupling of light to and from microsphere modes is crucial for laser performance.
    • Existing coupling methods can be inefficient, limiting output power.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and demonstrate a novel hybrid fiber taper as an efficient coupler for microsphere laser systems.
    • To enhance the coupling of pump and laser emission to and from microsphere modes.
    • To investigate the performance of a microsphere laser system utilizing this new coupler.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of a novel hybrid fiber taper coupler.
    • Integration of the taper coupler into a microsphere laser system.
    • Characterization of the laser output power and efficiency using optical spectroscopy.
