Background:

  • The Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) is crucial for evaluating educational interpreters using American Sign Language or sign systems.
  • Currently, the EIPA is not adapted for educational interpreters utilizing Cued Speech (CS).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of extending the EIPA to include educational interpreters who use Cued Speech.
  • To develop and pilot a Cued Speech version of the EIPA.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot EIPA test was administered to 24 educational Cued Speech interpreters.
  • The reliability of the assessment was evaluated by rating 15 interpreters' performances multiple times (test-retest and intrarater reliability).
  • Construct validity was also assessed.

Main Results:

  • The pilot EIPA demonstrated good construct validity and test-retest reliability.
  • Intrarater reliability was high (0.9), comparable to signing versions of the EIPA.
  • Only 48% of participating Cued Speech interpreters met a minimally acceptable performance level.

Conclusions:

  • The developed pilot test is a reliable instrument for assessing Cued Speech educational interpreters.
  • Inadequate interpreting performance, regardless of communication modality (CS or sign), may hinder classroom access for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  • Further research is needed to establish interrater reliability for the Cued Speech EIPA.
