Summary

Osteoporosis is under-recognized in men, especially elderly veterans. This study reviewed diagnostic procedures for male osteoporosis at a Veterans Health Administration (VA) medical center, finding high-risk patients are screened.

Background:

  • Osteoporosis prevalence in men is under-recognized, despite the Veterans Health Administration (VA) patient population being predominantly male.
  • Elderly veterans represent a demographic potentially at high risk for osteoporosis, yet data on male osteoporosis is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide initial insights into diagnostic procedures for male osteoporosis.
  • To analyze osteoporosis screening in male patients at a VA medical center.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review and descriptive analysis of patients undergoing radiological evaluation for osteoporosis.
  • Data collected from bone mineral density scans between 2001 and 2004 at one VA medical center.

Main Results:

  • 4,919 patients underwent bone mineral density scans from 2001-2004.
  • VA patients receiving scans were predominantly white, male, over age 70, and on medications with potential bone-loss side effects.

Conclusions:

  • Preliminary evidence suggests the VA screens vulnerable age groups in both genders for osteoporosis.
  • Increased provider awareness of osteoporosis risk in elderly males can improve early intervention and management.
