Vector Representation of Complex Numbers01:16

Vector Representation of Complex Numbers

Complex numbers, represented in Cartesian coordinates, can also be visualized as vectors. These vectors can be expressed in polar form, emphasizing their magnitude and angle. When a complex number is input into a function, the output is another complex number, highlighting the function's zero point from which the vector representation can originate.
Consider a function defined as the product of the complex factors in the numerator divided by the product of the complex factors in the denominator.

Vectors

Vectors are mathematical entities characterized by both magnitude and direction. Unlike scalars, which are defined solely by magnitude, vectors represent quantities like displacement, velocity, and force, where direction is essential. Vectors are graphically represented as directed line segments, extending from an initial point to a terminal point, denoted with bold letters or arrows placed above the symbol. Two vectors are deemed equal if they share identical magnitudes and directions,...

The Normal and Binormal Vectors

A roller coaster spiraling upward along a helical track offers a vivid illustration of the geometry of space curves. As the car follows the track, its movement at each point can be described using a set of three mutually perpendicular unit vectors: the tangent, normal, and binormal vectors. Together, these vectors form the Frenet–Serret frame, a moving coordinate system that captures how a curve behaves in three-dimensional space.Tangent, Normal, and Binormal VectorsThe unit tangent vector...

Couples: Scalar and Vector Formulation

One might wonder how the captain of a large ship can navigate through the ocean with just a turn of the steering wheel. The answer lies in the concept of two parallel forces that are equal in magnitude and opposite sense, creating a couple moment.
A couple moment is a rotational force that tends to rotate the steering wheel. The wheel's rotation can either be in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction. The right-hand rule is a helpful method for determining the direction of a couple moment. To...

Scalar and Vectors

In mechanics, commonly used terms like force, speed, velocity, and work can be classified as either scalar or vector quantities. A scalar is a physical quantity that can be described by its magnitude alone and does not require any directional components. Examples of scalar quantities are mass, area, and length.
Scalar quantities with the same physical units can be added or subtracted according to the usual algebra rules for numbers. For example, a class ending 10 min earlier than 50 min lasts...

Vectors in Engineering Applications

A steel beam supported by two identical cables provides a practical example of static equilibrium. The beam has a downward weight of 5000 N, while the two cables support it from opposite sides. Because the arrangement is symmetric, each cable makes the same angle of 60° with the horizontal beam and carries the same tension. In equilibrium, the beam remains completely at rest. This means that the total horizontal and vertical forces must both be zero. Each cable pulls along its own direction, so...
