Four patients with fourth ventricle arachnoid cysts experienced relief from intracranial pressure symptoms after surgical cyst removal. This effective treatment offers a positive prognosis for similar cases.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Neurology
  • Pediatric Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Arachnoid cysts are congenital malformations that can cause mass effect.
  • Fourth ventricle arachnoid cysts are rare and can lead to obstructive hydrocephalus.

Observation:

  • Four patients (2 male, 2 female; ages 18 months to 52 years) presented with symptoms of raised intracranial pressure.
  • Symptoms included headache, vomiting, and papilledema, indicative of increased intracranial pressure.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision or marsupialization of the fourth ventricle arachnoid cyst was performed.
  • All patients achieved complete symptom resolution following surgical intervention.

Implications:

  • Surgical management of fourth ventricle arachnoid cysts is highly effective.
