Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Endoscopic Surgery
  • Medical Imaging

Context:

  • Sphenoidal pathologies present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
  • Accurate assessment of sphenoid sinus impairment is crucial for effective treatment.
  • Minimally invasive endoscopic techniques are increasingly preferred in sinus surgery.

Purpose:

  • To describe and evaluate a technique of sphenoidal puncture and sinusoscopy under radioscopic monitoring and general anesthesia.
  • To assess the diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic efficacy of this endoscopic approach for sphenoidal pathologies.
  • To report on the safety and complication rate of the procedure.

Summary:

  • A technique involving sphenoidal puncture and sinusoscopy under radioscopic monitoring and general anesthesia was employed in 23 patients with diverse sphenoidal pathologies.
  • The procedure allowed for precise diagnosis of suspected sphenoidal impairments in all cases.
  • Therapeutic benefits were achieved in over half of the patients through effective sinus drainage.

Impact:

  • This endoscopic technique offers high diagnostic accuracy for sphenoid sinus conditions.
  • It provides a therapeutic effect via sinus drainage, improving patient outcomes.
  • The procedure demonstrates a favorable safety profile with no reported surgical complications, highlighting its value in treating sphenoid sinus diseases.
