  • Performing forced expiratory maneuvers for lung function tests is challenging in young children and individuals with certain disabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the correlation between Impulse Oscillometry (IOS) parameters and standard spirometry/peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) measurements.
  • To assess the utility of IOS in pediatric lung function exploration, particularly in asthmatic children.

Main Methods:

  • Impulse Oscillometry (IOS), spirometry, and PEFR were performed on 48 children with asthma and 66 controls (aged 7-15).
  • Total IgE, eosinophil counts, and specific IgE levels were measured.
  • Methacholine challenge was conducted, and correlations were analyzed across atopic and non-atopic groups.

Main Results:

  • FEV(1) and PEFR significantly correlated with IOS impedance and resistance (R) at multiple frequencies.
  • FVC also showed significant correlation with IOS impedance and R.
  • FEF(25-75%) did not correlate with resistance measurements.

Conclusions:

  • IOS parameters, including impedance and resistance, are significantly correlated with FEV(1), FVC, and PEFR in children.
  • IOS is a suitable alternative for lung function assessment when spirometry and PEF measurements are not possible, especially in atopic children.
