Gastric xanthoma (GX) are yellowish mucosal lesions composed of lipid-laden cells. Some GX lesions can spontaneously decrease or disappear over time, independent of cholesterol levels.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Pathology
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Gastric xanthoma (GX) are benign, yellowish mucosal lesions characterized by lipid-laden histiocytes.
    • These lesions can occur as single or multiple foci within the gastric mucosa.

    Observation:

    • This report details seven cases of gastric xanthoma.
    • One patient presented with concurrent jejunal xanthoma.
    • Histological examination revealed lipid-laden histiocytes within the lamina propria.

    Findings:

    • No direct correlation was found between gastric xanthoma and hypercholesterolemia.
    • Slight hypertriglyceridemia was noted in four of the seven cases.
    • Follow-up gastroscopies in four patients showed lesion stability, size reduction, or complete disappearance.

    Implications:

    • Gastric xanthoma may exhibit spontaneous regression, suggesting a dynamic biological process.
    • The findings challenge a strict association with dyslipidemia, particularly hypercholesterolemia.
    • Further research into the pathogenesis and natural history of gastric xanthoma is warranted.
