Sexual dysfunction is common in infertile couples, particularly affecting female arousal and sensation. Erectile dysfunction (ED) prevalence was also higher than in the general population.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Health
- Sexual Medicine
- Clinical Urology
Background:
- Infertility significantly impacts the physical and emotional health of individuals and couples.
- Sexual function is a crucial aspect of overall health and quality of life.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in infertile couples.
- To assess sexual function using validated questionnaires.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 infertile couples at a tertiary university hospital.
- Sexual dysfunction was assessed using the Sexual Function Questionnaire (SFQ) and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF).
Main Results:
- Only 7% of women reported normal sexual function across all SFQ domains.
- Female sexual dysfunction was most prevalent in arousal-sensation (80.2%) and least in orgasm (22.8%).
- Severe erectile dysfunction (ED) affected 2% of male participants, with higher overall ED prevalence than reported in normal populations.
Conclusions:
- Sexual dysfunction, especially in arousal-sensation and arousal-lubrication domains, is more prevalent in infertile couples than in the general Iranian population.
- The prevalence of any degree of ED was higher in infertile men compared to normal populations.
- Further research is needed to understand the influence of demographic factors, relationship dynamics, and infertility itself on sexual dysfunction.
