Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.
Data Collection III01:05

Data Collection III

The physical assessment examines the patient for objective data that defines the patient's condition, and aids in formulating the nursing care plan. The purpose of physical assessment is a health status appraisal, which includes identifying health problems, and establishing a database for nursing intervention.
The principles to begin the physical assessment include conducting a comprehensive or problem-related history in a quiet, well-lit room, emphasizing privacy and comfort for the patient.
Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Assessing Body Temperature - Axilla

Procedural Guide for Assessing Axillary Body Temperature using a Digital Thermometer:
Step 1: Perform hand hygiene and put on clean gloves to maintain infection control and prevent cross-contamination.
Step 2: Prepare the patient by explaining the procedure to ensure understanding and cooperation. Ensure privacy, expose the axilla, and inform the patient that minimal movement is crucial for an accurate reading.
Step 3: Adjust the patient’s clothing to expose only the axilla. It minimizes...
Assessing Body Temperature - Rectal01:27

Assessing Body Temperature - Rectal

Rectal temperature measurement is considered the most precise method for assessing core body temperature and typically registers higher than oral temperature. For adults, the rectal thermometer should be inserted 1 to 1.5 inches into the rectum to obtain the most accurate reading.
Follow these steps for rectal temperature assessment:
Step 1: Perform hand hygiene and don clean gloves to prevent cross-infection.
Step 2: Position the patient in a side-lying position to better visualize the rectal...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Body Image Research
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Traditional body image research focuses on negative dimensions.
  • A need exists for measures assessing positive body image aspects.
  • Body appreciation is a key component of positive body image.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Body Appreciation Scale (BAS).
  • To assess the reliability and construct validity of the BAS.
  • To provide a tool for measuring positive body image.

Main Methods:

  • Development of the Body Appreciation Scale (BAS).
  • Validation across four independent college women samples (N=181, 327, 424, 177).
  • Psychometric analyses including unidimensionality, construct validity, and reliability testing.

Main Results:

  • The BAS demonstrated unidimensionality and strong construct validity.
  • BAS scores correlated as expected with related psychological constructs.
  • The BAS showed score stability and internal consistency reliability.
  • BAS uniquely predicted psychological well-being beyond other body image measures.

Conclusions:

  • The Body Appreciation Scale (BAS) is a reliable and valid measure.
  • The BAS is useful for researchers and clinicians studying positive body image.
  • This scale advances the assessment of positive body image in women.
