    Summary

    Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and controls with specific human leukocyte antigen (HL-A) types showed higher neutralizing (Nt) antibodies to herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2). These increases were significant in MS patients, but overall antibody levels did not differ between groups.

    Background:

    • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections are common, and their potential role in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis is debated.
    • Human leukocyte antigen (HL-A) genes play a crucial role in immune responses and are associated with various autoimmune diseases, including MS.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between serum neutralizing antibodies to HSV-1 and HSV-2 and specific HL-A types in patients with MS and healthy controls.
    • To determine if specific HL-A types are associated with altered antibody responses to HSV in the context of MS.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from MS patients and age- and sex-matched control subjects.
    • Neutralizing antibody titers against HSV-1 and HSV-2 were measured.
    • The presence of specific HL-A types (HL-A3, HL-A7) was determined for all participants.

    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this association and its implications for MS pathogenesis.
