Summary

Activated T and B lymphocytes produce lymphotoxin (LT). Multiple sclerosis patients showed increased spontaneous LT production during relapse, suggesting LT’s role in demyelination.

Background:

  • Lymphotoxin (LT) is a lymphokine produced by activated T and B lymphocytes with cytotoxic and cytostatic properties.
  • Cytokines, including LT, are increasingly investigated for their role in the pathomechanism of demyelinization.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by demyelination in the central nervous system.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate lymphotoxin (LT) production in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • To compare LT production in MS patients with a control group of patients suffering from other neurologic diseases (OND).
  • To explore the potential involvement of LT in the demyelination process observed in MS.

Main Methods:

  • Quantification of spontaneous LT production by T lymphocytes in MS patients during relapse and in OND patients.
  • Assessment of LT production by T and B lymphocytes from MS patients following mitogen stimulation.
