Summary

Microscopic hemorrhages in eye muscles were found in 12 of 91 autopsy cases, primarily in asphyxia. Macroscopic hemorrhages, often linked to strangulation, also occurred in some cases.

Area of Science:

  • Forensic pathology
  • Ocular pathology
  • Toxicology

Context:

  • Investigating the diagnostic significance of ocular muscle hemorrhages in forensic autopsies.
  • Examining 91 unselected forensic autopsy cases for both macroscopic and microscopic ocular muscle hemorrhages.

Purpose:

  • To determine the occurrence and potential correlation of ocular muscle hemorrhages with specific causes of death, particularly asphyxia and strangulation.

Summary:

  • Microscopic hemorrhages were identified in the ocular muscles of 12 cases, predominantly associated with asphyxia, including two cases of pulmonary embolism.
  • Macroscopic hemorrhages were observed in five cases, frequently linked to strangulation.
  • The findings suggest ocular muscle hemorrhages are indicative of asphyxial processes, with macroscopic evidence potentially occurring in protracted cases like manual strangulation or ligature strangulation.

Impact:

  • Provides potential microscopic and macroscopic indicators for asphyxia and strangulation in forensic investigations.
  • Highlights the utility of ocular muscle examination in determining the cause of death.
  • Contributes to the understanding of post-mortem findings in asphyxial deaths.
