Summary

Ligneous conjunctivitis, a rare condition, was observed in a patient with Lyell syndrome. Histological findings suggest an immunoallergic post-membranous granuloma of the conjunctiva.

Background:

  • Lyell syndrome is a severe mucocutaneous reaction.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old patient with Lyell syndrome presented with ligneous conjunctivitis in the right eye.
  • Histological examination revealed a hyperplastic conjunctiva with epithelial edema and subepithelial inflammatory infiltration.
  • Characteristic hyaline plates, dilated vessels, and fibrin deposition were noted.

Findings:

  • Ligneous conjunctivitis in this case was interpreted as a post-membranous granuloma of the palpebral conjunctiva.
  • The co-occurrence suggests an immunoallergic etiology for ligneous conjunctivitis in the context of Lyell syndrome.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential immunoallergic nature of ligneous conjunctivitis.
  • Understanding the link between Lyell syndrome and ligneous conjunctivitis may inform future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
  • Further research into the immunological mechanisms is warranted.
