Background:

  • Tourette disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental condition.
  • Genetic factors, including Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genes, are implicated in its etiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequencies of specific Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) A, B, C, and DR alleles in Korean patients diagnosed with Tourette disorder.
  • To compare these frequencies with those in a control group of healthy Korean subjects.
  • To explore potential correlations between family history of tic disorders and HLA allele distribution.

Main Methods:

  • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typing was performed on 73 Korean patients with Tourette disorder (DSM III-R criteria).
  • HLA typing was also conducted on 291 healthy Korean control subjects.
  • Statistical analysis was used to compare allele frequencies between the patient and control groups.

Main Results:

  • Higher frequencies of HLA A11 and HLA A26(10) were observed in Tourette disorder patients compared to controls.
  • Lower incidences of HLA A24(9) and HLA B13 were found in the patient group.
  • A family history of tic disorders was significantly associated with a reduced frequency of the HLA A24(9) allele.

Conclusions:

  • Specific Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) alleles, particularly HLA A11 and A26(10), may be associated with an increased susceptibility to Tourette disorder in the Korean population.
  • Conversely, HLA A24(9) and HLA B13 might be protective or less involved in the pathogenesis of Tourette disorder.
  • The association between a family history of tic disorders and lower HLA A24(9) frequency warrants further investigation into the genetic underpinnings of Tourette disorder inheritance.
