Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the implementation and initial acceptance of the universal varicella immunization program in Prince Edward Island.
  • To assess vaccine-associated adverse events and overall vaccine acceptance.

Main Methods:

  • School-based clinics offered varicella vaccine to students in grades one to six.
  • A universal program for children 12 months of age was established.
  • Catch-up clinics were provided for children aged 12 months to grade one.

Main Results:

  • Vaccine acceptance varied by grade, with 18.8% of students overall receiving the vaccine.
  • Acceptance ranged from 29.1% in grade one to 9.8% in grade six.
  • Vaccine-associated adverse events were uncommon, and the vaccine was well accepted.
