When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Summary

Genetic analysis of the interleukin 23 receptor (IL23R) gene suggests it does not significantly increase the risk for multiple sclerosis (MS). This study investigated IL23R variants in relation to MS susceptibility.

Background:

  • Similar autoimmune characteristics between IBD and multiple sclerosis (MS) prompted investigation of IL23R in MS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the association between IL23R gene variants and susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • To evaluate the potential role of IL23R as a risk factor for MS in a Scandinavian population.

Main Methods:

  • Genotyping of 32 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the IL23R gene.
  • Case-control study design involving 1114 MS patients and 1235 healthy controls of Scandinavian origin.
  • Haplotype analysis to examine combinations of SNPs.

Main Results:

  • No significant association was found between individual IL23R SNPs and MS risk.
  • Haplotype analysis did not reveal any significant differences between MS patients and controls.
  • Observed differences between groups were minimal, suggesting a lack of strong genetic contribution.

Conclusions:

  • The IL23R gene is unlikely to confer a significant risk for developing multiple sclerosis (MS).
