The sudden death of Charles Gerhardt at forty years age, on August 1856, lost his widow and his three young children in a dramatic financial situation. Many people have been moved and helped Mrs. Gerhardt. The prestigious chemist Thenard has founded the "Société de secours des Amis des sciences" and the two sons of Gerhardt have obtained an imperial grant to make their schooling at Strasbourg's secondary school.
