Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Summary

Researchers developed the Trichotillomania Scale for Children (TSC) to assess hair-pulling disorder in youth. The TSC shows promise as a reliable tool for measuring severity and distress in pediatric trichotillomania.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Trichotillomania (TTM) is a chronic impulse control disorder involving repetitive hair-pulling, leading to alopecia.
  • Pediatric TTM research is limited by a lack of validated assessment tools for children and adolescents.
  • Existing measures may not adequately capture the nuances of TTM in younger populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a new self-report measure for pediatric trichotillomania, the Trichotillomania Scale for Children (TSC).
  • To assess the reliability and validity of the TSC when completed by children and/or their parents.
  • To provide a tool for better understanding and quantifying TTM in child and adolescent samples.

Main Methods:

  • Development of the Trichotillomania Scale for Children (TSC) as a self-report measure.
  • Data collection from 113 children and 132 parents online, and 41 child-parent dyads in a clinic setting.
  • Replicated principal components analysis to identify scale components (Severity, Distress/Impairment) and assess reliability and validity.

Main Results:

  • The TSC demonstrated adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability for total scores and subscales.
  • Parent-child agreement on the TSC was good in the online sample but more modest in the clinical sample.
  • Children's TSC scores correlated significantly with other measures of TTM severity, indicating good convergent validity.

Conclusions:

  • The Trichotillomania Scale for Children (TSC) appears to be a potentially useful measure for assessing TTM in pediatric populations.
  • The scale effectively measures Severity and Distress/Impairment related to TTM in children and adolescents.
  • Further research is needed to fully clarify the convergent validity of the TSC, particularly in clinical settings.
