IR Absorption Frequency: Hybridization01:21

IR Absorption Frequency: Hybridization

Hydrocarbons such as alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes show characteristic C–H stretching absorption bands. These IR stretching frequencies depend on the hybridization of the involved carbon atom and can be explained in terms of the s character of each hybridized atomic orbital.
Among the sp, sp2, and sp3 hybridized orbitals, sp orbitals have the maximum s character (50%). Consequently, the electrons are held more closely to the nucleus, resulting in stronger and shorter C–H bonds that stretch at a...

    Summary

We compensated for dispersion in a terahertz-span optical frequency comb generator using an intracavity prism pair. This increased the comb

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Frequency Comb Generation
    • Terahertz Spectroscopy

    Background:

    • Optical frequency combs (OFCs) are crucial for precise measurements.
    • Dispersion limits the spectral span of OFCs, restricting their applications.
    • Lithium niobate modulators are commonly used in OFC generation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To demonstrate dispersion compensation in a terahertz-span OFC generator.
    • To enhance the spectral span of the optical frequency comb.
    • To investigate the use of intracavity prism pairs for dispersion management.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized an intracavity prism pair within the OFC generator.
    • Partially compensated for the material dispersion introduced by the lithium niobate modulator.

  • Measured the spectral span of the optical frequency comb before and after compensation.
  • Main Results:

    • Achieved dispersion compensation using an intracavity prism pair.
    • Increased the spectral span of the terahertz-span OFC from 3.0 THz to 4.3 THz.
    • Demonstrated the effectiveness of prism pairs in managing dispersion in OFC systems.

    Conclusions:

    • Intracavity dispersion compensation is effective for enhancing OFC spectral span.
    • Prism pairs offer a viable method for mitigating dispersion in lithium niobate-based OFC generators.
    • The demonstrated technique broadens the applicability of terahertz-span optical frequency combs.
