Summary

Prophylactic human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is safe and effective for preventing HPV 16/18 infections and related cervical diseases in young women. Vaccination should be combined with screening for optimal cervical cancer prevention.

  • L1 virus-like particle prophylactic vaccines are well-tolerated and prevent HPV 16/18 infections and cervical diseases in HPV-naive young women for at least five years.
  • The quadrivalent vaccine also prevents HPV 6/11 infections, and the bivalent vaccine may offer cross-protection against HPV 31/45.
  • Vaccines are most effective before sexual debut due to higher immune response and lower HPV prevalence, but are ineffective in existing carriers or on established lesions.
