Summary

A rare cystic nephroblastoma, similar to human Wilms' tumor, was found in a marmoset. This study documents the first nonhuman primate case of this specific kidney tumor variant.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Comparative Oncology
  • Primate Medicine

Background:

  • Nephroblastomas are rare embryonic kidney tumors, most commonly diagnosed in children (Wilms' tumor).
  • Their occurrence in nonhuman primates is exceptionally infrequent, with limited documentation in scientific literature.
  • This case involves a 17-month-old male common marmoset presenting with abdominal distension.

Observation:

  • Necropsy revealed a unilateral polycystic renal neoplasm within the marmoset's kidney.
  • Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses identified diverse tissue components, including mesenchymal and epithelial cells, and extensive cyst formation.
  • No evidence of metastatic disease was detected.

Findings:

  • The renal tumor was classified as a nephroblastoma, exhibiting characteristics analogous to human Wilms' tumor.

  • The presence of significant cystic changes represents a variant presentation of this tumor type.
  • This marks the first reported instance of a cystic nephroblastoma in a nonhuman primate.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the understanding of renal neoplasia in nonhuman primates.
    • It provides valuable comparative data for studying Wilms' tumor development and pathology.
    • Highlights the importance of thorough histopathological evaluation for diagnosing rare tumors in veterinary medicine.
