Background:

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a standard treatment for gallbladder diseases.
Ensuring safe and effective training for junior surgeons in laparoscopic techniques is crucial.
Bile duct injury rates are comparable between laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured laparoscopic cholecystectomy training program.
To assess patient safety outcomes during surgical training.
To analyze the impact of training on surgical performance metrics.

Main Methods:

Analysis of a 6-year structured training program (May 2000 - May 2006).
Inclusion of 1,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies performed by consultants and trainees.

Follow-up of three surgical trainees throughout their accreditation process.

Main Results:

No significant differences in conversion rates, bile duct injury, or complication rates across consultant, trainee, and newly trained surgeon groups.
Trainee surgeons (Group 2) experienced significantly longer operation durations (P < 0.0001).
Group 2 showed a higher incidence of gallstone pancreatitis (P < 0.019).

Conclusions:

The structured training program is effective for junior surgeons.
Patient safety is not compromised during the laparoscopic cholecystectomy training.
The program successfully facilitates the transfer of laparoscopic surgical skills.
