Gyroscope: Precession01:24

Gyroscope: Precession

Precession can be demonstrated effectively through a spinning top. If a spinning top is placed on a flat surface near the surface of the Earth at a vertical angle and is not spinning, it will fall over due to the force of gravity producing a torque acting on its center of mass. However, if the top is spinning on its axis, it precesses about the vertical direction, rather than topple over due to this torque. Precessional motion is a combination of a steady circular motion of the axis and the...

Summary

This study details a method for optimizing laser mode matching in ring laser gyros using cylindrical lenses. Proper mode matching significantly enhances the lowest-order mode amplitude and suppresses higher-order modes.

Area of Science:

  • Optics
  • Laser Physics
  • Optical Engineering

Background:

  • Passive resonant ring laser gyros are sensitive to input laser mode characteristics.
  • Efficient operation requires matching the input laser mode to the lowest-order cavity mode.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and analyze an analytical method for mode matching in passive resonant ring laser gyros.
  • To determine optimal parameters for cylindrical mode-matching lenses.

Main Methods:

  • Described an analytical method for mode matching.
  • Detailed steps for locating and calculating focal lengths of cylindrical lenses.
  • Experimentally compared results with no mode matching, spherical lens, horizontal-only, and full cylindrical lens matching.

Main Results:

  • The amplitude of the lowest-order mode increased approximately 2.5 times with proper cylindrical lens mode matching compared to no matching.
  • Higher-order modes were reduced to near zero intensity.
  • The relative intensity of the lowest-order mode to higher-order modes increased from ~5x to ~60x.

Conclusions:

  • Cylindrical mode-matching lenses are crucial for optimizing passive resonant ring laser gyro performance.
  • Effective mode matching significantly improves signal quality and reduces noise by enhancing the fundamental mode and suppressing unwanted higher-order modes.
