A new water-soluble polymer bone hemostatic material showed promise in reducing bone infections in a rabbit model. Compared to bone wax, the polymer significantly decreased osteomyelitis rates, offering a safer alternative for bone healing.

  • All defects were inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus to simulate a contaminated environment.
  • Main Results:

    • Bone wax treatment resulted in 100% infection and osteomyelitis with no bone healing.
    • The polymer and control groups showed a 25% osteomyelitis rate and 75% normal bone healing.
    • The polymer group exhibited significantly lower osteomyelitis and positive culture rates than the bone wax group.

    Conclusions:

    • The water-soluble polymer demonstrated a reduced rate of osteomyelitis compared to bone wax in a contaminated setting.
    • No significant difference in infection or healing was observed between the polymer and control groups.
    • This soluble polymer represents a potentially safer alternative to bone wax, possibly decreasing postoperative bone infections.
